The best way to understand our API we refer your to the documentation and try out the API for yourself using our testing key and postcodes. We also provide examples of the API implementation in different programming languages and maintain fully open source libraries to aid you with integration into your own application.
Postcode lookups can be purchased from your account area. Each key has its own individual lookup count and can hold either a public or private lookup licence. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
We provide email notifications to alert you when you are running low on lookups, this is activated on a per API key basis. You can set varying thresholds and multiple notification email addresses per key from your account area.
Yes. We provide geographical postcode data completely free of charge, no lookups will be used, all you need is an API key. For more information see our documentation regarding location data.

All Open Postcodes payments are managed by Stripe. Stripe holds the highest most stringent level of PCI certificate, Level 1 Service Provider. Open Postcodes servers never hold or 'see' any card information, this is all handled by Stripe.

No. Lookups are never removed from your balance unless you use them.
Public lookups are used for application which are publicly available, such as websites or applications, where a postcode will be entered by a customer. For example a website or application which is avaliable to the customer to register, enter their delivery information, etc.
Private lookups are used for applications which are only available for private use i.e. within an organisation or company. For example when postcodes will be entered by staff members, you or specific users and not for public use.
This can be done from your account area. Simply sign in, and click "Edit Account" on the right-hand side. You can change all of the information associated with your account.
If you forget your account password you can have it reset using the forgot password form. This will allow you to create a new account password after clicking the verification link on the forgot password email.
No. We only provide a HTTPS API, any plain-text HTTP connection is rejected
Currently we only provide responses in JSON format, however we may consider additional formats in the future. Contact support if you require a particular format.
This error means the API key you are using has 0 postcode lookups remaining. In order to continue requesting data you must purchase more lookups for that key, from your account area.

In order to prevent key abuse we provide a range of measures to protect your key. Daily Lookup Limit, to ensure only a set number of lookups can be used on daily basis. Daily IP Lookup Limit, to ensure a single client can only perform a set number of lookups on a daily basis. Allowed URLs, only processes requests from a list of prediterminded URLs supplied for each key.
The address is new and is currently not included on the Ordnance Survey's Database or the address is a POBox.
Major API versions will never change structure within its minor versions, check out versioning for more information. We also provide optional email notifications when API alterations occur, this setting can be changed in your "Edit Account" settings.
